Barbering & Cosmetology Licensure

Barbering & Cosmetology Licensure

To work as a barber or cosmetologist in the U.S., you must be licensed in the state where you plan to practice. Each state has its own:
  • Licensing authority (usually the State Board of Cosmetology or Barbering)
  • Required education and training hours
  • Specific exam formats and languages offered
Most states also require to verify that your foreign education and training meet their licensing standards. Common types of evaluations include:
  • General Evaluation – Includes your total study hours and credential equivalency
  • Course-by-Course Evaluation – Provides a detailed analysis of each subject or course you completed

Choose a state below and look for the licensing requirements before you start the evaluation:

Most states require you to complete a program at an approved school, while others may accept an apprenticeship as an alternative. In addition to initial training, it’s important to understand your state’s requirements for continuing education units (CEUs), license renewal timelines and fees, and policies on reciprocity or license transfers.
