Texas Board of Nursing

The Texas Board of Nursing is responsible for licensing Registered Nurses (RNs) and Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) in the state.

Texas is a member of the Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC). Under the NLC:

  • Nurses who hold a multistate license issued by another NLC member state can practice in Texas without applying for additional licensure.
  • If a nurse moves to Texas and declares it as their primary state of residence, they must apply for a Texas multistate license.

Licensure Application Requirements

If nursing courses and textbooks were not taught in English, you must provide proof of English language proficiency by submitting results from one of the following exams:

  • IELTS Academic- computer or paper-based
  • TOEFL iBT produced by Educational Testing Service (ETS)
  • Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE)
